An Epping man who put false numberplates on his motorcycle "to make a couple of short trips around the district" was fined a total of $375 in Ryde Court this week.
Richard David Weir, 18, apprentice electrician, of Cliff Road, Epping, pleaded guilty to displaying numberplates calculated to deceive and to riding an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle at Beecroft on February 7.
The magistrate, Mr Darcy Leo, fined Weir $125 for each offence. He said Weir had been in court before and it appeared all his trouble revolved around motorcycles. He should tell his friends that putting "bodgie" plates on cycles would get them into trouble.
Weir told the court he still had a $500 fine to pay for a previous offence. He had put the numberplates on the cycle "to make a couple of short trips around the district".
He was on his way to a park for a ride when stopped by police.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Peter Feather, said police saw Weir riding in Murray Farm Road. When he saw the police he turned on to a dirt track leading to an oval. He was stopped and a check showed that the numberplates belonged to another motorcycle, and that the cycle he was riding had never been registered.
Weir had told police: "I put the plate of my other bike on here so I wouldn't get hassled."
